Family Christmas Photos During the Holiday Season

The Christmas season is a great time to get family Christmas photos done. The season is such a joyful time often with family visiting from out of town, which makes it a perfect holiday activity.

When this family contacted me about doing some family photos over Christmas I was excited to be a part of documenting a family that had traveled to be together at Christmas. I met with Tracy over coffee and asked her to tell me about her family and how they liked to spend time over the holidays together. She told me that every Christmas Eve when they gathered in Manitoba they would go out hiking at night and have a bonfire in the woods and roast hot dogs and have hot chocolate. It was such a charming tradition I knew we had to recreate it for them and capture it.

We all met up just before Christmas last year for a wonderful, but cold, family session in Bowness Park. They brought the goodies and their skates and we had a wonderful time hanging out. This session inspired me so much because it really illustrates my heart and intention behind doing what I do. I do photography because I love to preserve memories and capture authentic moments that go beyond poses and pretty backgrounds. Any photographer can put people into poses, the challenge is to truly document relationships. That appeals to the photojournalist in me.

I was so inspired by this tradition that I got my own family to light a fire in my parent’s backyard last Christmas Eve and we roasted hot dogs surrounded by falling snow. It was magical. I highly recommend it.
