Karen and Anil’s Christian Indian wedding in October was probably one of the most beautiful fall days we had here in Calgary. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, the couple was in love, and their family and friends were so happy and supportive.
Karen and Anil had a small Indian wedding with their family and friends traveling primarily from Calgary and Chicago. They traveled from near and far to support this loving couple. They laughed and danced their hearts out. Wow, was this reception fun! The highlight of the evening for many was when a friend was called upon to do a lip sync battle, and he danced a perfect “Single Ladies”.
When I first met Karen and Anil they expressed to me that capturing the story of their day was of the utmost importance. The traditions, the tender looks from their loved ones, the details, the colors, and the candid moments. I spent 14 hours with them in total and loved every moment. I liked how thoughtful and intentional their day was. Every moment included honouring their family or their family planning special things for them. Prayers before the ceremony, exchanging of gifts, and special dances at the reception, the list goes on. I especially loved the moment in the ceremony where Karen was covered by a sari gifted to her by her new husband as a symbol of coming under his protection and becoming part of his family. In that moment, in the Indian culture they are married. It was so beautiful to see.
When I look back on my favourite images of the day, they are the ones that show how much Karen and Anil’s family care for them. The tender embrace of her father, the longing gaze of their mothers, the kindness in the eyes of their guests. Those are moments no photographer could manufacture, only capture.
Congratulations Karen and Anil, I know the future is so bright for you both and I was truly honoured to be there for your special day.
