When I explain my style for photographing newborns I say I strive for natural newborn baby photography that is candid and documentary in nature. This session is a great example of how real emotions can be captured when the photographer is an observer instead of an orchestrator.
Chase and Erika welcomed their second child into the world at the beginning of January and I was delighted to go to their home to meet baby August shortly after. What a beautiful little girl she is. Golden hair and big blue eyes that calmly take in her surroundings.
Her big brother Elias was a totally charming toddler. Alternating between playing with his toys and being enticed to come sit with his parents and his sister on occasion. Children this age often find in hard to sit still for photographs because they really want to explore and experience things on their own terms. I think this is a wonderful part of being a kid and the best way to handle it is to let them come around on their own because only then will I be able to capture their authentic reactions.
We tried for quite some time to get Elias over to be near his sister, but only after we gave him a bit of space and time did he come over on his own to study her and then he even gave August a sweet kiss on the head. Magic! Those are moments that we can’t make happen.
You may remember Chase and Erika from their family session and Erika’s maternity session. This is one family I can’t seem to get enough of and I hope you feel the same.
