Erika and Chase and their son Elias live in a charming older character home in the heart of Kensington, one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Calgary in my opinion. They can easily walk to the heart of Kensignton, which is where Erika and I went to take some maternity portraits.
We chose to use the buildings and locations of this neighbourhood because they have special meaning for this family. One building we chose was one that Erika passes on the way to her work and she said she had never noticed how it might make for an interesting portrait. We had a fun time exploring new areas of familiar sights.
What I appreciate about choosing a unique setting such as an urban backdrop is that it challenges me to find corners and settings that are unexpected. I believe there is beauty and interest to be found in any place, especially when the location is sentimental. We started in her home, which means as the years go on she’ll always be able to show her children where their family lived when they were young.
See more of Erika and Chase and Elias at their family session I did on the same day as these portraits.
